History and achievements
Zenit is a football club based in the Northern capital of Russia situated on the Neva River. The list of honored Zenit supporters includes numerous notable citizens of Saint Petersburg for a reason. Zenit was the first club to win all major USSR and modern Russia trophies. The club museum features USSR and Russia championship, cup and super cup trophies. However, the major success was victory in the UEFA Cup (second one after CSKA for Russian teams) and Russia’s first UEFA Super Cup.
On May 25, 1925 sports community of the Leningrad metal works initiated a football club called ‘Stalinets’ – predecessor of the modern Zenit. Only 13 years later the club from Leningrad took part in the USSR top league championship. In 1939 the Leningrad team lost to Spartak Moscow, which marked the beginning of uncompromising rivalry between the clubs.
The club got its modern name only in 1940 when the metal works were handed over to the People’s Commissariat. In 1945 Zenit won the USSR Cup after consecutive confident victories over Dinamo Moscow and Spartak Moscow.
Zenit had to wait for their next title quite a bit: in 1984 the club finished first in the USSR championship.
In 15 years Anatoly Byshovets, Zenit head coach, helped the club to their next Russian Cup after defeating Dinamo Moscow in the final.
Modern Zenit has featured numerous outstanding players: supporters are sure to name Panov, Kerzhakov, Arshavin, Pogrebnyak among them. In 2007 the club won its first Russian championship and in May 2008 Glasgow Rangers were defeated in the UEFA Cup final. The same season witnessed the UEFA Super Cup victory over Manchester United.
Lately the club from St.Petersburg shocked football society with some of the most expensive transfers, such as the move of Hulk from Porto and Axel Witsel from Benfica.
